Making the world a brighter place
American Girl has a long-standing commitment to helping children and families in need. We're proud to support a wide range of causes and issues affecting millions of individuals, such as literacy, poverty, homelessness, natural disasters, and illness, to name just a few. We work with leading charitable organizations to ensure our donations are helping make the world a brighter place.
To date, American Girl has donated more than $96 million in dolls, books, clothes, and cash to countless charities nationwide. The company administers its philanthropic efforts in several ways, including partnerships with the following national organizations:
Children's Hospital Association
The Children's Hospital Association promotes the health and well-being of America's 70 million children and their families. The Association works with more than 200 children's medical centers to ensure that all children have access to a hospital when they need one and are provided high-quality care and services. American Girl supports the Children's Hospital Association with an annual donation of American Girl dolls. Since 2010, the company has donated nearly half-a-million dollars' worth of dolls to help bring smiles and comfort to thousands of young girls who are in the hospital.
K.I.D.S. (Kids In Distressed Situations)
Kids In Distressed Situations has helped nearly 70 million needy children by providing nearly $1 billion in new clothes, toys, books, and much more. Since 1990, American Girl has donated more than $15 million in new clothes and books to the K.I.D.S. organization. Having something brand-new brings hope and confidence to children and their families, and K.I.D.S. works with nearly 1,000 local service agencies in the U.S. and around the world to distribute new items to kids who are poor, sick, or homeless, or who have parents who are away from home or unable to care for them. K.I.D.S. also helps families who have been affected by natural disasters.
Save the Children
Save the Children works across the nation in some of the most under-served, rural areas, where one in four children lives in poverty. Partnering with local schools and community organizations, Save the Children's U.S. Programs provide early education, literacy, and physical-activity and nutrition programs to children living in poverty. Save the Children also ensures the needs of children are met during disasters through their emergency response work. Save the Children's work benefited more than 240,000 children in 18 states last year.
American Girl supports Save the Children's literacy program each year with a book and monetary donation. To date, American Girl has provided more than $2 million in books and cash to help the organization develop students' reading skills and provide them with the guidance and support they need to grow as readers.
American Girl Fashion Show®
American Girl offers nonprofit organizations across the country a fully conceived fundraising fashion show event that leverages the widespread appeal of the American Girl brand to raise funds for children's charities. Blending education with entertainment, the American Girl Fashion Show offers a memorable experience for girls and their families and friends. Since 1992, American Girl events have raised nearly $30 million for worthwhile causes nationwide.
Since 1992, American Girl has generously invested in United Way campaigns in those areas where its employees live and work. Over that time, the company and its employees have donated more than $2 million and provided thousands of refurbished dolls to families in need.
As part of Mattel's global partnership with Special Olympics, American Girl provides employee volunteers to assist at local Special Olympics athletic events held throughout the year. By providing support and encouragement to the individual athletes, American Girl volunteers help further Special Olympics' mission to empower people with intellectual disabilities through sports training and competition.
Madison Children's Museum
American Girl donates returned merchandise and seconds to the Madison Children's Museum for the organization's volunteer-driven annual benefit sale in July. Since American Girl initiated this partnership in 1988, the annual sale has raised more than $23 million and attracted millions of shoppers from around the country.
American Girl's Fund for Children
A percentage of the proceeds generated by the Madison Children's Museum American Girl Benefit Sale is returned to American Girl. All proceeds are redistributed through the company's Fund for Children (FFC). The FFC provides grants for philanthropic programs throughout Dane County that enhance children's education in the arts and environment. To date, FFC has awarded more than $10 million to numerous nonprofits, including The Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Onstage: A Performing Arts Series for Students, and the Kids in the Rotunda performances at the Madison Overture Center, and hundreds of local performance groups and artist-in-residence programs.
Product donations and community partnerships
To help schools, libraries, and other children's nonprofit organizations with their fundraising efforts, American Girl donates its award-winning dolls and books for raffles and auctions. To date, the company has donated millions of our products to nonprofits throughout the country. In addition, our American Girl retail stores have also developed numerous community partnerships to support organizations that benefit children, such as children's hospitals, family support services, and schools, to name a few.
