Mix it Up. Make your own signature trail mix this summer

Whether you and your family hit the trail or your adventures take place in your own backyard, refuel with your own healthy, packable snack using these ideas from American Girl magazine! Begin with at least one base, then add a little something from each category—sweet, salty, fruity, & nutty and to suit your taste (as appropriate for your family’s dietary needs and allergies, of course). Experiment with different flavor combinations, and have a blast playing with your food!

Begin with a good base. Try:

  • Multigrain O-shaped cereal
  • Graham cracker cereal
  • Bear-shaped grahams
  • Bite-sized crackers—plain or cheesy
  • Granola
  • Cereal with “ancient” grains

Add just a hint of something SWEET

  • Yogurt-covered dried fruit
  • Chocolate chips—dark, milk, or white
  • Peanut butter chips
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Mini candy-coated chocolates
  • Colorful, sweet cereal puffs

Make it FRUITY with dried fruit—

  • Strawberries, blueberries, or cranberries
  • Raisins (dark or golden), currants, or dates
  • Apples, apricots, or cherries
  • Bananas, mangoes, or pineapple
  • Candied citrus (orange, lemon) or ginger
  • Coconut, kiwi, or figs

And get a little NUTTY, too—

  • Peanuts (plain, salted, or honey-roasted)
  • Cashews
  • Pecans
  • Walnuts
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Almonds

And a bit of something SALTY, like—

  • Mini pretzels
  • Rye chips
  • Crispy roasted chickpeas
  • Toasted pumpkin seeds
  • Sunflower seeds (hulled)
  • Pita chips

Here are three fun combinations to get you started!

Morning Mix

  • Multigrain O-shaped cereal
  • Dried fruit
  • Yogurt-covered raisins
  • Nuts

S'mores Mix

  • Graham cracker cereal
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate chips

Cherry Beary Mix

  • Bear-shaped grahams
  • Yogurt-covered dried cranberries
  • Dried cherries
  • Granola
