Is your classroom filled with artists on the rise? Let your students take art class to new heights with a project that could win your school up to $10,000! This extra-special assignment includes two components: a digital image of artwork created by the class and a written essay of 500 words or less.

ELEMENT 1: Get creative and let your imaginations take flight as your class collaborates on a unique design to portray their passion for art. The masterpiece should incorporate a hot air balloon in some way, and be artistic in every way!

ELEMENT 2: Compose a literary work of art! In 500 words or less, tell us why art is valuable at your school, the impact art has on your students, and specific plans for how the grant would be used to further the arts at your school.

Teachers, submit the class project and the essay before May 31, 2013, and your school could be one of 13 lucky winners!

Elevate the Arts Contest Details

Before you enter the contest, we want to make sure you read through our OFFICIAL RULES, but here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • The group project must be created by your school's art class, with students between the ages of 8 and 12, and submitted by the art teacher.
  • Your artwork must incorporate a hot air balloon in some way. Be imaginative! Be original! And brainstorm together to choose a project that shows your excitement, energy, and passion for art!
  • Please don't include any photographs of people in your art project or in the digital image you submit.
  • Entries must include both a digital image of the class art project and a 500-word essay that explains why art matters to your school, the impact art has on the students at your school, and specific plans about how the grant money would be used to further the arts at your school.
  • Only one entry may be submitted per school.
  • Entries must be submitted by May 31, 2013, using our online form.
  • The top 13 finalists will be determined by an American Girl judging committee. Our Grand Prize, second, and third place winners will be selected from those finalists with input from Americans for the Arts representatives. All prize winners will be determined based on:
    Artistic merit: originality and creativity
    Effort: how much work the class put into the project
    Effective expression of the theme: through the classroom project and the written essay
