Dear American Girl,
I am at sleepaway camp and I’m so homesick. It seems as if everyone else is having fun but I really miss my family. I’m too scared to tell my bunkmates or the camp counselors how I feel. What should I do?
Here's your advice:
See if your parents can mail you a picture of your whole family. Keep it with you and look at it when you feel homesick.

I went to camp for the first time a few weeks ago. One of the girls in my cabin told me that she was really homesick, too. I told her that I felt the same way. It turned out that our whole cabin was feeling homesick so we were all able to help each other through it.

My advice is to gather up your courage and tell a camp counselor. Don’t worry about what others will think—just be concerned about how you feel. Remember, camp counselors are there to help you. They’ve dealt with homesick campers before so they will have awesome advice.

Ask yourself this question: Why am I scared? If you figure out what is making you feel icky, maybe you can figure out how to make it better. If that doesn’t work, make a list of all the fun things at camp. Try to make the best of it!

Try not to talk to your parents too much. It seems crazy but it can help to keep home off your mind sometimes. That way you can focus on what you’re doing at camp.

Write a letter to your parents every day. Tell them all about the new experiences you’re having and the fun things you are doing with your new friends. If you can’t mail the letters to them, save them and read them to your parents when you’re home.
