Past You Said It!
Nine-year-old Anna asked this question: "When it comes to holiday gifts, what is your favorite homemade gift to make, and why?"
These girls shared their thoughts:
Every year, my mom, brother, and I make mint-flavored hot cocoa mixes to give as gifts. We put this mix in pretty glass jars and then deliver them to our friends and neighbors. I always love to see the happy looks on their faces.
–Azalynn, age 12, Russia
I like to create drawings and give them as gifts. I'm fantastic at drawing animals, so usually for the holidays, I'll sketch someone's favorite animal and frame it. My grandpa has a bulldog named Winston, so this year I'm going to frame a drawing of Winston for him.
–Sophie, age 11, Colorado
I like to make books for my mom. She loves to read and I love to write, so it ends up being the perfect gift for both of us!
–Lily, age 10, Washington
Every year, I like to give collages to friends and family for the holidays. I cut out pictures from old magazines that represent each person's interests, and I glue the pictures to a piece of cardboard. I make these collages for tons of people, and they love them.
–Sarah, age 12, New York
I love to crochet, so I enjoy making scarves for my family and friends. I taught myself how to crochet when I was nine years old. It always makes me smile to see someone wrapped up in one of my warm scarves.
–Emily, age 13, Tennessee
I like to make fresh Hawaiian flower leis for my family and friends. Leis symbolize peace, love, and happiness, and that's what the holidays are all about.
–Kailani, age 12, Hawaii
I love to create my own funny videos. My brother and I made up two characters last year for our movie, and my mom was laughing so hard, she was in tears by the end of it! We look forward to creating a new movie every year for the holidays.
–Lili, age 11, Illinois
My favorite gifts to give are homemade caramels. I've been making them since I was little, and it has become a tradition for me to make them. Everyone loves them, and I enjoy seeing how happy my friends and family are when they eat them.
–Emily, age 12, Washington
My favorite homemade gifts are paper ornaments, because they're fun to make and look cute, too. I make a new one every year for each person in my family.
–Megan, age 11, Florida
I like to weave washcloths. Last year, I got a weaving kit, and I've used it a lot. It can take a long time to make one washcloth, but it's worth it to see people grin when they open the gifts I've made for them.
–Emmaline, age 9, Maine
My favorite holiday gift to give is a handmade bookmark. Whenever that person reads a book and uses the bookmark, she will remember that I gave her the gift, and I hope that'll make her feel good.
–Abigail, age 11, Texas
A homemade card is hands down my favorite thing to make for someone for the holidays. I sketch a holiday drawing, such as a pine tree or wreath, on each card. I also like to write a special message inside the card.
–Abigail, age 10, New York
One year, I gave my mom a painted rock in her favorite color, which is gold. I also painted a big heart on it, and gave it to her with a card. She loved it! Painted rocks are cute gifts, and they're fun to make, too.
–Sophia, age 11, Colorado
During the holidays, my sister and I will make homemade gifts for our parents. I like to make something different every year. Whether it's an ornament for our tree or a sewed pillow, each gift is made with care and effort, and my parents always love their gifts.
