Past You Said It!
Ten-year-old Madeline asked this question: "If you started your own charity or organization, who or what would it help and why?"
These girls shared their thoughts:
My dream is to open an animal sanctuary. It would be a wildlife rehabilitation center, a shelter for dogs and cats, and a place for rescued farm animals. It could help educate people about all kinds of animals, and all of the donations would go toward care for the animals.

I'd start an organization that helps elderly people. Kids would be matched up with elderly people who don't have family members living nearby. Each kid would visit a person two to three times a week to play games, listen to stories, and have fun. It would be a great way to help older people be happier.
–Madison, age 11, Texas
If I could start an organization, it would help kids discover which sports they're best at and encourage them to have fun exercising. It could help kids be more active and make new friends, too.
–Celeste, age 12, Ohio
My five-year-old sister was diagnosed with diabetes this year, and it's been tough on my family. So my charity would organize runs and other fund-raisers for juvenile diabetes.
–Emma, age 10, North Carolina
I wish I could start an organization that brightens up hospital rooms. I went to a hospital to visit someone, and I thought the room looked dull and uninspiring. My organization would decorate hospital rooms with bright colors and cheerful decor. I think it could help patients feel better.
–Brooke, age 12, Kentucky
My charity would donate crayons, markers, pencils, and papers to kids in areas that have been affected by natural disasters, such as earthquakes. The kids could use the items in school and to make art projects.
–Brianna, age 10, Oregon
I would love to provide free cooking classes to kids in need. Cooking makes me feel as if I can do anything if I put my mind to it, and I want to share that feeling with others.
–Kaylee, age 11, Montana
I would start an organization that encourages people to not say offensive words about people with special needs. Kids at my school say these words a lot, and they don't realize how mean they are.
–Sara, age 12, Pennsylvania
I'd like to start an organization that helps disabled people learn how to ski. Skiing is important to me, and I think everyone should be able to enjoy the excitement.
–Lia, age 11, Vermont
If I were to start my own organization, it would help victims of bullying. I think that it's sad when people are bullied, and they shouldn't be treated that way. My friend was bullied last year, and it hurt to see her go through that. I helped her, and I want to help others who are going through the same thing.
–Emma, age 12, Texas
I would start an organization that gives toys to homeless children. I'd create this organization because all children should experience the joy of snuggling with a fluffy stuffed animal.
–Mikaela, age 10, California
My organization would allow kids to try out dream careers. I want to be a film director when I grow up, and I want to start learning how to make movies now. My organization would give kids opportunities to test out what they want to be when they grow up. The experience would help them be even better at whatever they choose to do.
–Trinity, age 12, Minnesota
I'd help children who have arthritis. I have arthritis, and it can be very difficult for me. Kids with arthritis need medicine and have to go to many doctors' appointments. Some families can't afford these things. My charity would help families pay for medical costs. It would make me happy to see smiles on the kids' faces instead of tears.
–Meredith, age 13, Alabama
One person can do a lot of good in the world, so I'm not sure what kind of charity I'd choose. There are endangered animals to help, food pantries to donate to, hospitals that need money for research, and much more. So I think my charity would help many worthy causes, since it's impossible for me to pick just one.
–Primrose, age 12, California
