Past You Said It!
Time for Lunch!
Eleven-year-old Bethany asked this question: "If you could add one food to your school's cafeteria menu, which food would you add and why?"
These girls shared their thoughts:
I would add a strawberry smoothie to my school cafeteria's menu. It's a delicious drink, and all my worries seem to melt away when I sip a smoothie.
–Paige, age 11, Washington
During fall, I wish my cafeteria would serve pumpkin bread, pumpkin pudding, or pumpkin pie. I love anything that's pumpkin-flavored!
–Alexandria-Nicole, age 12, Virginia
In my cafeteria, I'd create a make-your-own-sandwich area, where kids could choose among many kinds of breads, ingredients, and toppings. It would be great to eat fresh sandwiches at school—that way, I wouldn't have to make them at home.
–Sachie, age 9, Japan
I'd love to eat a cupcake at every lunch. Who wouldn't look forward to eating a sweet treat in the middle of a school day?
–Sapphire, age 12, California
If I got to add something to my school's menu, I'd choose carrot sticks with low-fat ranch dressing for dipping. Carrots are more nutritious than chips and crackers.
–Joanna, age 9, Texas
Tofu lasagna would be my choice for my school cafeteria's menu. I'm a vegetarian, and it would be nice to have another choice for lunch. It would also be a great way to get more veggies into kids' diets.
–Summer, age 12, Texas
I'd pick my mom's homemade French bread. It's soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. If the bread were on my school cafeteria's menu, I would love every single lunch.
–Chrissy, age 13, Minnesota
I would add sushi to the menu. Sushi would be an interesting change in our usual menu, and some kids might like eating it instead of hot dogs and pizza. Sushi is one of my favorite things to eat.
–Katherine, age 11, Massachusetts
Milk shakes would be yummy! My mom says that when she was little, her school served milk shakes at lunch. I'd love to bring that back at my school. There would be lots of delicious flavors, such as strawberry, cake batter, and blueberry pie.
–Hailey, age 12, Wyoming
If I could choose anything for my school's menu, I'd pick dumplings. I lived in China for a couple of years, and dumplings were my favorite things to eat in restaurants. I love dumplings because they remind me of the fun I had in China.
–Audrey, age 11, Florida
I'd eat tortellini pasta at lunch. Pasta is a comfort food for me, so if I were to have a bad day, it would be a nice thing to eat.
–Sofie, age 10, Texas
I love fruit—strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, you name it. I wish our school would offer a fruit bar every day. It would be cool to pick out any fruit I wanted.
–Analise, age 12, Ohio
It would fun if my school served hot pretzels at lunch. Kids could choose a plain, salted, or sweet pretzel, and we'd get little containers of dipping sauces, too.
–Riley, age 9, Alabama
My school is about to get an ice cream machine, but instead of that, I would like to have a frozen-yogurt machine. I think frozen yogurt tastes better than ice cream!
–Greta, age 12, Minnesota
On our way out of the cafeteria, it would be neat if my classmates and I could pick up granola bars to snack on in the afternoon. Granola bars would keep us feeling full and focused until we went home.
–Melissa, age 10, Maryland
I wouldn't add anything to the menu because I don't need to. I'm home-schooled! My parents are great cooks, and we eat everything from pork to cinnamon rolls to spaghetti. Sometimes we even get to drink hot chocolate during class.
–Annabella Rose, age 12, North Dakota
