Winter Break Boredom BustersAdvice
After the whirlwind of the holidays comes the weeklong winter break. Here are some fun ideas for when your daughter says “Mom, I’m bored!”
Have some camping fun in the family room! She can invite a few friends for an indoor winter sleepover. String twinkly lights for stars, and hang a paper lantern for a moon. Drape sheets over furniture to make a “tent,” then have guests lay out their sleeping bags and help them make s’mores in the microwave. It’s a fun activity sure to cure the winter blues.
Nothing warms up a cold afternoon like baking goodies. Your girl can bake some mini pies and treat the whole family with this kid-friendly recipe.
You will need:
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 (14.1-ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
- Cooking spray
- Pie filling
Scatter flour on a cutting board. Unroll one pie crust, and use a rolling pin to flatten it a bit more. Use a 4-inch round cookie cutter to cut out circles. Repeat with both pie crusts until you have 12 circles of dough. Grease a muffin pan with cooking spray, then place circles in the muffin pan. Fill each with pie filing of your choice. Bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Let cool and enjoy!
Add some winter flair to an ordinary shirt! First, help your girl choose a long-sleeved shirt, then mark the center of her elbows with masking tape. Remove the shirt, then place pieces of cardboard in the sleeves underneath the elbows. Help her cut 2 identical shapes from glitter felt (tip: tracing around a cookie cutter works well). She can use fabric glue to attach the patches, and let dry.
Who can build the cutest snowman? The tallest snowman? The most creative snowman? Gather some old hats and scarves, plus a couple of carrot noses and other snowman-making supplies. Encourage your girl to put on her winter gear, grab a friend or a sibling, and get outside for some fresh-air fun!
Spend a wintry day snuggled up on the couch with a mug of cocoa and a great book. She can pick up one of American Girl’s historical character books and jump back in time with our beloved stories. Or, read a fun-filled WellieWisher early chapter book to your little one. Your girl will get lost in the pages (and fulfill some of her school’s required reading minutes, too!)
