About American Girl's 40th anniversary

What’s the history behind American Girl?
American Girl was founded in 1986 by a teacher-turned-entrepreneur who believed that exciting stories featuring diverse characters could inspire girls to make their own positive mark on the world. And she was right. Over the past 40 years, American Girl has helped generations of girls find courage, build confidence, and spread kindness through every age and stage of their journey.

Who founded American Girl?
American Girl was founded by Pleasant Rowland, a former educator who believed that great stories with aspirational characters could inspire girls to make their own positive mark on the world. Pleasant combined her love of American history and her commitment to high-quality educational products to create a new product line, The American Girls Collection. From there, she developed even more books, dolls, and toys that integrated learning and play experiences to emphasize important values. Pleasant also fulfilled her longtime dream of opening experiential retail stores, the first of which debuted in Chicago in 1998, where fans could see the dolls they loved in person and fully immerse themselves in the world of American Girl. As American Girl grew in popularity, major toy companies took notice, and Mattel acquired the brand in 1998.

Who are the original American Girl characters?
The original American Girl characters—often called the “original six”—are Kirsten Larson, Samantha Parkington, Molly McIntire, Felicity Merriman, Addy Walker, and Josefina Montoya. Each character represents a distinct period in American history and brings a unique perspective shaped by her time, place, and personal journey. Together, they laid the foundation for American Girl’s storytelling legacy.

When were American Girl’s historical characters created?
American Girl’s first historical characters were introduced in 1986. Over the last 40 years, additional historical characters joined the collection, expanding the brand’s exploration of poignant moments in American history. Each character was developed with extensive research to ensure authenticity, historical accuracy, and meaningful representation.

Who was the first Girl of the Year® character?
The first Girl of the Year® character was Lindsey Bergman, introduced in 2001. The Girl of the Year® line was created to reflect contemporary childhood experiences, highlighting modern interests, challenges, and passions. Each Girl of the Year® character is available for a limited time, marking a new chapter in American Girl storytelling.

What role have stories and books played in American Girl’s legacy?
Stories and books form the foundation of American Girl. Every character begins with a story, and every story American Girl writes starts with a desire to spark minds and hearts. From historical to contemporary, advice to activity, American Girl creates beloved books, podcasts, movies, and animated series that inspire girls to discover who they are—and who they’re meant to be.

Will new products be launched during American Girl’s 40th anniversary?
Yes. American Girl’s 40th anniversary includes new product releases alongside celebrations of beloved favorites from the past. Throughout the year, customers can discover reimagined dolls, all-new fashions, special collections, and commemorative experiences that honor American Girl’s legacy and introduce bright new stars to inspire future generations.

What is the Modern Era™ Collection?
Ever wondered how our historical characters might dress today? The Modern Era™ Collection opens a new chapter on beloved historical characters with a reimagined take on their original fashions. Each 14.5-inch doll includes updated outfits, modern hairstyles, story-inspired accessories, and collectible keepsake packaging. The collection honors the characters that started it all—Felicity Merriman™, Josefina Montoya™, Kirsten Larson™, Addy Walker™, Samantha Parkington™, and Molly McIntire™—and invites fans to fall in love with them again.

Are there in-store events for American Girl’s 40th anniversary?
Yes. American Girl stores are hosting special anniversary events and activities throughout the year as part of the 40th anniversary celebration. These experiences may include themed events, special dining options, and in-store activities designed to bring the celebration to life. Event offerings vary by location and month, encouraging families and fans to visit and participate throughout 2026. For more information, visit: americangirl.com/pages/retail
